The fourth guest, Heather’s husband Ian Wilkinson, survived but only after weeks in critical care and a liver transplant.

Packed with amatoxins—poisons that shut down DNA replication and destroy liver and kidney cells—the mushrooms are stealthy and lethal. Even a small dose can be fatal.

Symptoms typically kick in after a day of mild malaise, then rapidly escalate to vomiting, diarrhea, liver failure, and sometimes death. Without immediate medical help, survival rates plummet.


Erin Patterson: From Cook to Defendant

Erin Patterson, a 50‑year‑old mother of two, was a home cook with a penchant for foraging. According to her, she picked both edible and wild mushrooms during walks. But on that fateful day, prosecutors say she crossed a deadly line. She served four individually wrapped Beef Wellingtons—three for her guests, and one for herself and her kids. Hers, they claim, didn’t contain any mushrooms. Hers also had a different colored plate—an early red flag, prosecutors noted.

She’s accused of intentionally weighing out the death cap dose, choosing not to serve it to herself or her children. To lure her guests, Patterson allegedly feigned a terminal illness—claiming she had cancer. She even faked vomiting after the meal to appear innocent. Meanwhile, she allegedly disposed of a dehydrator (later found buried at a local landfill) which contained traces of death cap toxins.


The Legal Showdown: Trial & Verdict

When police pieced together the timeline—starting with hospital admissions on July 30, 2023—they quickly centered on Erin. By November, she was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Her trial began in April 2025 in Morwell's Supreme Court. Over ten weeks, more than 50 witnesses testified, including mushroom experts, doctors, police, family members, and even her own children. Digital forensics showed she’d been searching for “death cap mushrooms” online. 

CCTV confirmed her dumping of the dehydrator. Toxicology confirmed amatoxin in plates, leftover Wellington, the dehydrator, and in the victims' urine.

The prosecution, led by Nanette Rogers SC, highlighted four key deceptions: a false cancer diagnosis, deliberate placement of mushrooms only in guests’ servings, fake symptoms after the incident, and cover‑up efforts. 

They suggested lingering resentment might’ve been a motive—Patterson had messaged friends expressing anger over strained in‑law relations. But they never claimed any specific motive had to exist—just that her actions spoke volumes.

The defense, headed by Colin Mandy SC, conceded the mushrooms were in the meal but insisted it was all a terrible accident. 

Patterson claimed she picked mushrooms in good faith, accidentally mixed them with store‑bought ones, and then lost control upon seeing the fallout. 

She argued she had consumed some Wellington and was sick too, pointing to blood tests indicating elevated biomarkers that can’t be faked. She said her lies were panic-driven, not premeditated.

Despite the drama, the jury deliberated for six to seven days and returned one verdict—unanimously guilty on all charges—on July 7, 2025.


The Erin Patterson Motive Question: What Drove Her?

One of the most puzzling aspects of the case is motive. The prosecution didn’t have to provide one—Australian law only requires proof beyond reasonable doubt. Still, tensions between Patterson and her estranged in‑laws were evident. 

She’d voiced support for her husband in child‑support disputes, then later lashed out in online chats expressing resentment toward his parents for not stepping in.

Add to that her pretense of illness, her avoidance of eating the mushrooms herself, the dehydration device disposal—it looks calculated. Still, the court never pinned a single driving motive. 

The jury concluded that the suspicious behavior, taken together, proved intent.


The Verdict: Guilty on All Counts

When the foreperson uttered the word “Guilty” three times—for the murders—and a fourth time for attempted murder, the courtroom fell silent. Patterson showed no emotion. Outside, some spectators wept; her supporters simply shrugged and said, “It is what it is.”
