On July 20, 2025, beloved actor Malcolm‑Jamal Warner, best known as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, tragically drowned while vacationing in Costa Rica with his family.
Authorities say he was swimming off a beach in Limón (near Playa Cocles) when he was suddenly pulled out by a strong ocean current.
Bystanders rescued him, but despite the efforts of Costa Rica’s Red Cross, he had lost vital signs by the time they arrived. His death was officially ruled as asphyxia due to drowning.
It was a cruel twist of fate—one moment he was relaxing on a family trip, the next, nature snatched him away.
Officials confirmed the heartbreaking details: he was caught in a high current and later pronounced dead at the morgue. Warner was 54 years old.
Cause of Death: Asphyxia from Drowning
The medical examiner’s report and multiple media outlets agree: Warner died from asphyxia due to drowning.
Caught in the current and dragged under, he couldn’t breathe. The incident was abrupt—he vanished underwater too quickly for rescue teams to save him.
Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department and Costa Rican National Police have confirmed these precise details.
Malcolm‑Jamal Warner’s Wife and Child
Warner was married to Amanda Warner and had a daughter, born in June 2017. He’d kept his family life largely private—never publicly sharing their names—but did occasionally post photos celebrating them on social media.
Warner revealed during a May 2025 appearance on the "Hot and Bothered" podcast that he met his wife through a mutual friend.
"So, after being in a relationship for six years, I spent the next two years acting like I was in a relationship for six years. ... I went on a hiatus, like I was just completely disconnected — like no dating, no relationships, and mostly no sex," the late 9-1-1 actor explained. "So, that's the situation I was in, and I met my wife through a mutual friend. And because I was on this hiatus, I thought, 'I'm not really dating.' And our mutual friend said, 'A date wouldn't hurt. You know, she could be a really good friend or a really good spiritual connection.' I thought, 'That's great.'"
Sources suggest his wife may be a Connecticut–based attorney, though Warner never confirmed this publicly, respecting their privacy.
In interviews and online posts, he radiated pride as a father and husband—always humble, even as he spoke of family. Sadly, after the accident, it’s only been noted that he is “survived by his wife and daughter”.
