Different Types of System of Units in Measurement

Hello friends, Today's topic is related to measurement in which we will know about different types of systems of units in measurement.

Basically, a system of units is classified into two types of system of units, fundamental and derived units.

And then the fundamental system of units subdivided this like SI, FPS, CGS, and MKS which we will know below in detail.

Precise measurement dimensions like width, thickness, diameter, height, etc are of great importance in producing the component according to the designed dimensions.

The method of selection of the measuring instruments depends on the size and shape of the component.

Tools, gauges, and instruments are found for checking length, angle, radius, taper, and various other elements related to finished parts.

Many types of measuring instruments are the designed in which some of these are simple and inexpensive while others are complex and expensive.

So without wasting time let's know step by step different types of systems of units.

What is Measurement?

Measurement is the determination of the size of a component in standard units.

For example, in linear measurement, measurements of length, diameter, height, thickness, etc are taken, which includes both external and internal measurements.

When the magnitude (quantity, length, time, etc.) of a number to be measured is taken, then the same number is expressed in a pre-determined quantity.

This fixed predetermined quantity is called the unit.

System of Units

Units are the standard for taking measurements of a quantity which is accepted by people all over the world such as foot, pound, centimeter, gram, second, etc.

Types of System of Units

Basically, there are two types of system of units classified.
  • Fundamental Units
  • Derived Units

Fundamental Units

These are the units of basic quantities that mean units of length, mass, and time.

There are the following types of fundamental units are used in the measurement.

  • SI System of Units
  • FPS System of Units
  • CGS System of Units
  • MKS System of Units

SI System of Units

This is the most important type of system of units.

The full form of the SI system of units is the standard international system of units.

Now a day these types of systems of units replaced all other types of systems of units.

This system of units is accepted all over the world internationally and being used.

The seven basic units in these types of system of units are shown in the figure such as meter, kilogram, ampere, second, etc.

Basic Units in SI System

FPS
 System of Units

The full form of the FPS system of a unit is foot pound second.

In these types of systems of units length, mass and time are to be measured in the foot or feet, pound and second respectively.

That means in this F.P.S. System of units, The unit of length is a foot, the unit of mass is a pound and the unit of time is second.

These types of systems of units are also called as BIS system of units which means the British imperial system.

CGS System of Units

In these types of systems of units, length, mass and time are to be measured in centimeter, gram, and second respectively.

That means in the CGS system of units, The unit of length in centimeter,  the unit of mass is gram and the unit of time is second.

MKS System of Units

In this type of system of the unit, length, mass, and time are to be measured in meter, kilogram, and second respectively.

That means in the MKS system of units, The unit of length is meter, the unit of mass is kilogram and the unit of time is second.

Derived Units

These types of systems of units are used to express quantity by combining two or more basic fundamental units such as area, volume, capacity.

So here I discussed different types of systems of units in the measurement.

I hope you all enjoy this topic.
