Cylindrical Grinding Machine: Working, Parts, Types, Uses

Hello friends.

In this article, I am going to explain the key aspects of a cylindrical grinding machine (e.g. parts, types, uses, etc).

The cylindrical grinding machine is basically a type of grinding machine like a surface grinding machine, tool and cutter grinding machine, centerless grinding machine, etc.

So let's get started.

What is Cylindrical Grinding Machine?

This is a form of precision-type machinery where the purpose is to grind the outer and inner parts of the workpieces.

Working Principle of Cylindrical Grinding Machine

Within this machine, the workpiece is rotated between two centers on its axis.

From a high-speed rotation, the grinding wheel grinds the two centers on its axis so as to produce a smooth surface.

Parts of Cylindrical Grinding Machine

There are following parts are used:

  • Base
  • Wheel Head
  • Cross Feed Hand Wheel
  • Working Table
  • Table Traverse Hand Wheel
  • Headstock
  • Chuck
  • Belt Pulley
  • Foot-stock

Show in the figure parts of cylindrical grinding machine which are described below in detail.

Base

This is the main part of the machine. It is heavy and provides strength and support to the whole machine.

Wheel Head

This wheel head is mounted on the cross slide.

It moves vertically so that the depth of cut can be fed by the cross-feed handwheel or via a power source.

Cross Feed Hand Wheel

The cross feed hand wheel is used to move the wheel head to set the depth of cut in the workpiece.

Working Table

The working table is mounted on the guideways that reciprocate longitudinally back and forth.

It can be moved by table traverse hand wheel or via a power source.

In a working table, trip dogs are arranged to control reciprocation.

Table Traverse Hand Wheel

A table traverse hand wheel is used to move the table longitudinally back and forth.

Headstock

The headstock is mounted on the left end of the table. And, it houses the motor that can be used to drive the workpiece.

The headstock supports the workpiece through a center, and the job is carried out by a carrier or dog.

Chuck

A chuck is a type of work holding device attached to the headstock.

It is used in a grinding operation for holding the workpiece or a job.

Belt Pulley

A belt pulley is used to transmit rotation from one rotating pulley to another.

Foot-stock

This is mounted on the right end of the table.

It can be moved and locked at any position along with the table so as to hold workpieces of different lengths.

The center of the foot-stock supports the workpiece.

Types of Cylindrical Grinding Machine

There are the following types of machines available:

  • External Cylindrical Grinder
  • Internal Cylindrical Grinder
  • Universal Cylindrical Grinder
  • Centerless Cylindrical Grinder

External Cylindrical Grinder

These grind the external surfaces of the workpieces or a job.

Internal Cylindrical Grinder

These are used to grind the internal surfaces of the workpieces or jobs.

Universal Cylindrical Grinder

These come under the heading of precision grinding machines. And, are used when a workpiece has to be produced in a cylindrical or conical shape.

Centerless Cylindrical Grinder

For these machines, the workpiece is neither held in the center nor rotated.

Centerless cylindrical grinder parts and types I have already discussed in our previous article.

Methods of grinding cylindrical surfaces in a cylindrical grinding machine

There are following methods include:

  1. Hold the job well centered.
  2. Make a trial cut and use an outside micrometer to correct the error.
  3. Dressing the wheel for a fine finish.
  4. Finish the job.
  5. After the work is finished, remove the workpiece and turn off the machine.

In this post, we’ve discussed parts of cylindrical grinding machine, their types, working principles as well as methods of cylindrical surfaces.

I hope you like this post.

FAQ Related to Cylindrical Grinding Machine

What are three types of cylindrical grinders?

Cylindrical grinders can be divided into four types:

External

Internal

Universal

Centerless

How does a cylindrical grinder operate?

For operating a cylindrical grinder, firstly hold the workpiece or a job at the center and use an outside micrometer for error correction.

After that dressing the grinding wheel for accurate surface finish and then operate it.

In which workpiece rotate in one direction between the center and grinding wheel rotate in a opposite direction.

Through the cross feed hand wheel, grinding wheel can move up and down or also side to side by which depth of cut is provided.

As well as through table traverse hand wheel table can move back and forth by which grind the workpiece at required area.

After finishing remove the job or a workpiece.

What are the uses of cylindrical grinding machine?

The uses of cylindrical grinding machine for good accuracy to grind outer as well as the inner part of workpiece or a job.

What is CNC cylindrical grinding?

CNC cylindrical grinding machine is based on the computer numerical control system, it is used where the requirement of production is high like manufacturing, automobile industry.

What is the speed range of cylindrical grinding operation?

The speed range of cylindrical grinding machines during operation varies from 5000 to 12000 sfpm or sfm( surface feet per minute).

What is a primary difference between surface grinding and cylindrical grinding?

The major primary difference between these machines is that the former is used for surface grinding on flat surfaces whereas the latter is used for grind round shape jobs.
